Do Sound Absorption Panels Work?
Introduction
Acoustic panels are sound absorbing panels designed to absorb unwelcome background noise inside a space, reducing echoes, and delivering quality sound back to your room. Choosing the right acoustic materials is crucial to the effectiveness of acoustic panels. Some fabrics certainly perform better acoustically than others for a number of reasons.
What is the acoustic fabric?
This is possibly the most important factor. Get this wrong and the absorption performance of your sound-absorbing panels can be dramatically reduced. An acoustic fabric allows sound waves to pass through without reflecting or absorbing sound. In effect, it is transparent – take speakers coverings for example, they have the most highly transparent acoustic fabric as a result of the minor impact they have upon the sound being transmitted.
How is an acoustic fabric tested?
As an acoustic fabric is designed to be paired with sound-absorbing panels, this test measures the sound absorption of a fabric when it is applied to a 10cm thick sound absorbing foam. The results are then compared to the absorption of the foam in isolation, therefore demonstrating how well the fabric will complement the performance of the acoustic panel.
